Chapter Nineteen
âThe cook can stir and adjust seasoning but is basically little more than a witness to the adagio of a low flame nipping the underside of a big pot, working a slow alchemy.â
âMolly OâNeill, âA Simmer of Hope,â New York Times Magazine, January 30, 1994
Once we arrived at Houseboat Row and had walked Miss Gloria safely to her home, I told Nathan about what Darcy Rogers had said. âIn other words, Catherine might have lied to me right from the beginning. It seems Iâm a great big sucker,â I added with a sigh.
âA sucker with a great big heart,â said Nathan. I punched him in the shoulder, and he grinned. âKeep in mind that itâs not a personal vendetta with Darcy Rogers. Youâre a civilian and she feels itâs her duty to keep you safe.â He hesitated a minute, looking very serious, and then burst out laughing. âBesides, sheâs pretty sure youâll muck up her case. Iâll call the Sheriffâs Office tomorrow and see if theyâll tell me anything new.â
I followed him and the animals into our bedroom to get undressed for bed. âThank you. Speaking of telling, whatâs this about you passing out in a jet?â I asked, as I hung my dress in the closet.
He looked sheepish as he described how heâd volunteered to be one of the passengers in the Blue Angelsâ F-18. âThey taught us this cool maneuver to help us breathe when the force of gravity got too powerful. I may have passed out more than once, but I was the only one who didnât throw up.â
âCongratulations, I think,â I said, kissing him as I slid under the covers. Because really, what else could I say? He was so excited about it, and my nagging wouldnât change his mind one bit about the level of danger involved. Just as he didnât try too hard to keep me from solving the mystery of Catherine.
